Hey, how come during the internet boom, when a decent programmer could make $75/hr in Boston on contract, it was such a hassle for your free trade partner Canadians like me to get gig in the States? Sure, on paper there was access through H1B and TN Visas but in practice (see: Grasmick)the procedures and policies were and are effectively barriers to entry.

No wonder all of your jobs went offshore (including a net 100,000 gain of hi tech jobs for Canada); if The US gub'mint had let The Market operate efficiently and let carpetbagging Canucks like me help correct The Market (read "cash in") there would not have been a net, absolute decrease of 14% in the number of high tech workers in the USA from 2001-2004. Twenty million illegal aliens don't seem to have a problem finding work in The States but I need to drop five grand on a lawyer to have a shot at an American gig.

And lest anyone think I'm whining: All things considered I would've been better off here in Canada anyway. Many corporations and governments require security clearance here in Canada and I've leveraged that to the hilt and am not complaining. I think you have to live here for a minimum of 5 years so The Man can get a file on you. This effectively has acted as a barrier to entry for Chinese, Russsian, and Indian Geeks with whom I now have to compete.

All of this, of course, logically leads to the following question: Why does The US Government continue to reject profit? Justice, indeed!!! Human rights, indeed!!!

Come now... if you're really detached it shouldn't bother you that we're a bit miffed at your government's complete and utter refusal to live up to its obligations under NAFTA and therefor be viewed as failed trading partner.

Really, the dispute should give you cause to question your government - or at the bery least embarass you :-)

There actually is a cure for constantly hearing about softwood lumber -- it's called "convincing your federal government to honor their obligations and pay their bills."

Or can't they afford it?
